What is a Lean Organization like?

Lean organization. Where every Employee - bottom to top - strives for improvements every day; Where Value is defined and viewed  through the eyes of the Customer; Where standards, rules are followed, but also constantly challenged with a mindset focused on reducing waste, Where all this is done in a human, motivated teamspirit, keeping  morale up high.

Our  aim at GROW is to help Organizations - be it a Factory, a Service provider, or an Office -  find their  own unique path leading towards this ideal and to assist them along the path with our expertise in organisation development  and lean, so that they harvest all the benefits , while becoming a truly Lean operation.

Why is it worth to become a Lean organization?

Several companies can relate their success to Lean - Toyota is the classical example, as the methodology itself had developed there and became a worldwide example to follow.

The results of going the Lean way speak for themselves:

  • double-digit increase in efficiency
  • inventories reduced to their fractions
  • lead-times decreased to their third or quarter
  • quality indicators and metrics which track formerly unimaginably close to the ideal goals

and as a net result of all the above: significant cost savings!

The traps of Lean implementation

These results and the fact that the Lean tools (5S, kaizen, VSM, kan-ban, poka-yoke etc.) are quite simple, insipre and motivate many followers to try and apply the methodology. Still, a major proportion of Lean introductions (2 from 3) fail: the processes are not sustainable and the achieved results deteriorate after a while. Very often companies reach a quite good level in the application of tools and technics, but they stop at this point, and the program doesn't become the new normal way of operation.  Instead it slowly diminishes. Lean may even mean a constant „extra burden" to a small group of Leaders. Since the full potential of the transformation was not fulfilled in these cases, the expected results are not delivered either - or not up to the inveseted efforts. Then Lean can be seen as a source of frustration.

According to the approach of GROW, we differentiate 4 levels of Lean implementation and offer development steps to go up the „Lean Ladder".

We belive at GROW, that the key to the success of Lean development is how deeply it gets integrated into the organizational culture. It is our experience and firm view, that the most important factor is the human one - which can be managed the most effective way via organizational development  methods adjusted and applied to Lean. It does not matter, if our client is a beginner, or they have dealt with Lean implementation for several years, wether they are in the manufacturing, or in the service sector, GROW offers a tailor made Lean transformation support - reaching all levels of the organization.
